Martin, South Dakota!
Celebrating 100 Years
1911-2011

In 1910 unalloted Indian trust land, in what is now known as Bennett County, was ceded to the Federal Government by the Oglala Sioux Indians and opened for settlement October 1, 1912. During this period of slightly more than 50 years, a modern, attractive trade center has been developed to serve this growing wheat and cattle producing area.

Surrounded by the tall prairie grasses of south central South Dakota, our heartland town of Martin has a population of 1,106 and serves a market area of approximately 8,000. The largest community in Bennett County and the county seat, Martin is the center for business, education and medical care.

Martin's popularity is growing. Housing is affordable and attractive. The scenery and recreational opportunities are unmatchable with a very unique quality of life. Our kids are growing up in a hometown setting, surrounded by people who share middle-American values. Our schools are excellent. And South Dakota has the lowest crime rate in the nation.

But it's the people in our small town who make living here so special. We share a strong community spirit that comes from active civic involvement, volunteerism and positive relationships between business, schools and government.
