Meeting Minutes

MARTIN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING

The July meeting was called to order by President Richard Bair on July 15th, 2010 at Martin Livestock Café.  Minutes of the June meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report was presented, a copy is attached.  The bills were presented and a motion was made by Matt Kratovil to approve the bills, second by Brinn Simmons, motion carried.

The 50/60 Mixer was discussed and felt to be a success.

The 4th of July event had a good turnout and all went well.

Matt Kratovil reported that a new approach needs to be presented for the welcome to Martin sign and asked that any ideas be forwarded to him so that we can decide how we want to go about it and hopefully get something done in August.

Wayne Semmler reported that school will be starting on the 18th of August and the projects that have been started by the school are going well.

Melita York advised the group that the City of Martin has been awarded the Main Street grant in the amount of $977,500.  There will be a meeting in mid August to finalize plans for that project.

Dave Vinton of RC&D reported on the Youthworks groups that have been doing painting and general fix up for applicants around town.  They have been active in the community and RC &D was thanked for promoting this project.

Dick Bair presented a request from Horizon Health Care for a letter of support for grants that they are working on.   Wayne Semmler made a motion to provide such a letter, second by Dave Jones, motion carried.  Janice Ring of Horizon Health advised that the clinic will be providing free sports physicals through the first half of August and that they will be having a Smile Mobile coming through soon that will provide free dental exams for people with no dental insurance that meet income qualifications.

Applications can be filled out.

The new teacher welcome will be a luncheon meal at the grade school on the 17th of August.  We asked that Wayne Semmler get us a list of the new incoming teachers that are new to the area so that baskets can be prepared for them.

Matt Kratovil asked that anyone interested in helping with the fair parade or entering it please contact him.  The fair will be August 11-15 with the parade being on the 14that noon.

The tailgate party will be August 27th.  The game will start at 6 so we will probably need to set up by 4:30.

Harold Koening has agreed help cook the meat for the chamber’s meal during the centennial.

Tim Huether advised that 30 bicyclists will be coming through town on the 20th of July and would like us to provide a vegetarian meal for them.  Dave Jones made a motion that the Chamber provide $100 for the cost of vegetable and fruit trays and anyone that wanted to provide an additional salad could.  Motion was seconded by Brian Kirk, motion carried.

The August meeting will be hosted by the School system  on August 19th and the guest speaker will be Sylvia Christen from the SD Stockgrowers with the topic of Agritourism/Business planning.

The day of homecoming for the high school Bair Ford will be having a promotion in which Ford Motor will pay $20 for every test drive that day with the proceeds going to sports programs at the high school.  All members are encouraged to test drive a

Ford that day.

There being no further business Kenny Spears made a motion to adjourn, second by Brian Kirk, meeting adjourned.

Becoming involved with the Chamber and community events is a very inexpensive way to advertise. The exposure you gain is second to none. Monthly and seasonal promotions are planned to encourage visitors to shop Martin.
