Area Attractions
Martin, SD is home to many area attractions. Golfers hit the links at the
city golf course, while bowlers strike out at Sportsmans's Lanes.
People and pets play at Brooks Memorial Park and Hodson Park. Martin
boasts one outdoor and two indoor basketball courts. Soccer, baseball and football fields are in ready supply. A paved bike path
stretches through town, allowing walkers and bicyclists to travel from the
north edge of Martin to the Sunrise Housing in the east. The Bennett
County fair grounds feature an annual fair and rodeo. Wild Horse
Butte Pow Wow Grounds hosts traditional Native American ceremonies.
Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge
offers exquisite views and animals in their natural habitats.
South along Highway 73, the
Sandhills of Nebraska offer
unique terrain ripe with native grasslands, sand dunes, and wildlife. Near
Merriman, Nebraska (a short 20 minute drive from the center of Martin),
residents may visit the Bowring Ranch or Cottonwood Lake. The
Arthur
Bowring Sandhills State Historical Park features a unique view of the
history of ranching and the cattle industry from the late 1800's to the
early 1900's. Cottonwood Lake State Recreation Area Campground
offers power boating, picnicking, and fishing opportunities, as well as a
children's play ground.
To the east of and west along Highway 18, the
Rosebud
Sioux Tribe and the
Oglala Sioux Tribe preserve their heritages on tribal
ground. North of Martin, the
Badlands of South Dakota create beautiful
landscapes worth exploration.

Martin is a central location to Native American and Cowboy historical
sites as well as many parks and forests in western South Dakota.
Interior, SD

Badlands National Park. See the heart of nearly 244,000 acres of
badlands just 66 miles north of Martin.
Kadoka, SD
Located on I-90, 54 miles northeast of Martin, Kadoka is considered the
"Gateway to the Badlands." Kadoka sits on the east edge of the Badlands
National Park.
Pierre
and Fort Pierre, SD
Pierre, the Capitol of South Dakota, is 150 miles northeast of Martin and
sits on the Missouri River. See the historical places noted in the diaries
of Lewis and Clark and the more modern war memorials and capitol building.
Pine Ridge, SD
Cross 45 miles of some of the most beautiful prairie land into the Pine
Ridge Indian Reservation and see Native American heritage and historical
sites. Try your luck at the Prairie Wind Casino open 24 hours daily.
Rapid City, SD
Just 150 miles northwest of Martin lies Rapid City and the largest city
near the 1.2 million acres of the
Black Hills National Forest. Travel down I-90 and stop at the many
historical sites along the way or cut through the
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the
Badlands National Park.
Wall, SD
Visit the historical city of Wall 97 miles north of Martin. There lies the
famous
Wall Drug Store. Wall holds history of both the Native Americans
and the Old West.
Martin is also a central location to three noteworthy cities in Nebraska.
Chadron, NE
Only 94
miles west of Martin is Chadron, a city south of the Black Hills and west
of the Sandhills. Visit Chadron State Park or attend the annual Fur Trade
Days.
Gordon, NE
Gordon has
many recreational and outdoor activities to offer and is home to the
Sheridan County Fair and Rodeo and the Willow Tree Festival. It is only 50
miles southwest of Martin.
Valentine, NE
Valentine
has everything from canoeing, tubing and camping down the Niobrara River
to gambling at the
Rosebud Casino and is a short 80 miles southeast of Martin.
